As we left Shrewsbury this morning there was was mist in the sky, it was one of those days that could go any way, we drove south and things looked positive, blue holes appeared in the sky everywhere, as we passed The Longmynd sun started to shine on the hills around us, we passed Ludlow and climbed up on to Clee Hill and the views towards the Malvern Hills were fantastic. But then, we rounded the corner, and set off towards Cleeton St Mary and things changed! All that mist that had melted away from the rest of Shropshire had made a beeline for our race course, It made things interesting to say the least, at the summit runners were reported to be coming fom all angles, one of the Photographers, John Richards said he hardly got a decent shot all day, runners were all over the hill, and visibility was poor, and if things were bad on the way up, well they got worse on the way down, there are some runners who should have definately known better heading in completely the wrong direction.
The race was won by Tim Werritt of Mercia with Kate Bailey of Merionydd Harriers the first Lady, results can now be viewed on the web pages, and all will go forward to tomorrow's race to for the combined results that make up the Shropshire Weekend.
I have to say that numbers were a little disappointing today, just 41 runners. this is a classic race, with a long histor, when combined with tomorrow's race, it presents a real challenge, and thats what fell running is all about, next year is a real landmark for the Shropshire Weekend, we hope to see lots more runners taking on the challenge of two race back to back, so let hope see a few more of you there in 2011.
